šŸ¤Y4E-SEA at ECOSOC Youth Forum Side-event

Updated: Sep 6, 2023

ā€œDIGITALISATION IS AN ENABLER TO NOT ONLY RESOLVE REGIONAL ENERGY ISSUES, BUT ALSO ACCELERATE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENTā€

On 27 April 2023, our co-founder, Amira Bilqis, has shared her perspective as a Southeast Asian representative at the side event of Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Youth Forum ā€œYouth Reviewing SDG7 Enablers: Global South Perspective.ā€ The event was organised by BRICS YEA, partnered with the development programme Mission Impact and the Russian Federation.

The event gathered young energy and climate professionals, international organisations, and experts coming from different regions on the globe to share their knowledge on modern energy enablers and come up with way forward for the SDG7 agenda in the Global South by 2030.

In the event, Amira gave an brief overview on the existing interconnection project across ASEAN and the ASEAN Interconnected Power Grid ambition. On that note, she highlighted the importance of digitalisation in contributing to the resilient power supply in the Southeast Asia and addressing lingering regional issues, such as lack of energy access at the outmost areas, intermittency of variable renewable energy sources, and limited grid flexibility and modernisation. Regarding the youth role in the energy digitalisation of the region, Amira affirmed young people could bring innovative ideas and initiatives from their perspective to the table to support national energy transition, regional energy targets, and SDG7 agenda. She was confident to share that, with the majority of the energy start-ups as youth, providing an enabling environment could accelerate the digitalisation and modernisation of the energy supply, and thus contribute to the SGD Goal. Furthermore, as digitalisation is an interdisciplinary field that requires tremendous efforts and resources, Amira also stressed the critical role of collaborative approach through technological transfer and knowledge sharing among Southeast Asian countries with others coming from other parts around the world.

The outcome of the side-event will be policy recommendations from the participants to integrate energy enablers into the SDG7 review this year. All the inputs and contributions from the event will be included in the Youth SDG7 Report published by the UN Secretary-General by the youth oragnisations - members of the international Youth Energy Transition Commission.
