On October 8-11, 2024, Youth for Energy of Southeast Asia (Y4E-SEA) recently attended the RealTalk Southeast Asia workshop, a transformative training program aimed at enhancing communication strategies of across the region. The workshop, titled "Changing The Narrative Towards an Empowered and Resilient Region" was organized by The Climate Reality Project Philippines.
Y4E-SEA was invited along with 17 Southeast Asian youth-led organisations, to share insights and best practices in effective communication. Our members, Auliya Febriyanti and Hizkia Posumah, represented Y4E-SEA to deliver insights on "Renewable Energy Landscape in Southeast Asia". The presentation provided an in-depth overview of the current state and future projections of renewable energy development across the region, using data trends to frame the opportunities and challenges ahead.
The Role of Youth in Shaping Southeast Asia’s Energy Future
Auliya and Hizkia emphasized the crucial role of youth in achieving renewable energy goals in Southeast Asia. They showcased demographic trends projecting that the region’s population will be increasingly dominated by young people in the coming years. Despite this, youth participation in the renewable energy (RE) sector and policymaking remains limited. They also highlighted that many young workers lack the skill sets aligned with jobs in RE sectors and other emerging green industries, creating a gap that must be addressed to harness the full potential of the youth workforce. Through education, raising awareness, and greater involvement in decision-making, young people can play a transformative role in accelerating the region’s transition to clean energy.
REalTalk Southeast Asia: Building a Regional Renewable Energy Movement
REalTalk Southeast Asia envisions a regional movement that empowers communities, fosters resilience, and promotes sustainability. This four-day workshop brought together organizations from across Southeast Asia, each contributing to the development of renewable energy in their respective countries.
The event underscored the pivotal role of renewable energy in shaping a sustainable future. Through discussions, workshops, and storytelling, participants explored the power of RE to rewrite the region’s energy narrative. The event aimed to challenge the dominant reliance on conventional finite energy sources with effective communications while sparking dialogue around sustainable energy options. REalTalk Southeast Asia harnessed stories of transformation driven by renewable energy to inspire collective action. Participants were encouraged to explore innovative solutions and embrace the opportunities presented by the region’s evolving energy landscape through effective ways of communication.
